From June 4-6, 2025, the board and partners of the Cabox Aspiring Geopark hosted the Canadian Geoparks Network (CGN) site visit and evaluation of the aspiring geopark. This came after the board submitted their application dossier that "highly impressed" the CGN. Hosting the CGN for this site evaluation marks a critical step in Cabox’s journey toward becoming Newfoundland and Labrador’s second and Canada's sixth UNESCO Global Geopark. If successful, the Cabox Geopark could receive UNESCO Global Geopark designation within the next 2 years.

A series of three images. From left to right, the first image is of two men talking intently in front of a large rock, the second image is of an aerial view of barren, orange rocky hills that plunge into a bay, and the third image is of two men in a helicopter. One man is the pilot and the other holds a clip board.
A few photos from the site visit (left to right): Gillams, North Arm Hills, and flying over the Bay of Islands.
The CGN visit is part of the formal evaluation process on the road to UNESCO designation. Their role is to ensure aspiring geoparks meet international standards in conservation, education, community engagement, and sustainable development. During the visit, the authenticity and community foundation of the Cabox initiative was inevitable. Every conversation reflected a genuine pride of place, support for the geopark, and a commitment to sharing it responsibly with the world.

The Cabox Aspiring Geopark has the potential to be a driver of sustainable tourism and a platform for telling the regions cultural and geological heritage. For more information about the Cabox Aspiring Geopark, visit caboxgeopark.org, facebook.com/caboxgeopark, or view the pdf below.

Congratulations to the board and all partners on achieving this milestone.
